CS373 Fall 2021: Michael Kavas
Week 11
What did you do this past week?
I did not do too much with IDB this week, as I had a large project in my Game Tech class and did not worry too much about Phase 3. I looked at the grading specs and thought about what work I would need to do, and what I would need to change in my existing code.
What’s in your way?
There’s nothing in my way currently, I’m ready to get Phase 3 completed. I’ll have a busier week than this last one, but as far as IDB is concerned, I have no issues keeping me back.
What will you do next week?
Next week I’ll begin implementing Phase 3, and start working with my team to finish our group objectives. Sorting and searching will take the longest so I’ll get started on that first.
If you read it, what did you think of the Paper #11: Getters and Setters?
This paper made a lot more sense to me this year than it did when I read it in OOP. Accessor methods are dangerous and I have run into a lot more issues with them since last year. It’s still difficult for me to write code without accessors, but I have been working on it. This paper has refreshed my knowledge of accessors and how to eliminate them.
What was your experience of relational algebra, select, and project?
Learning about database operations was helpful because I haven’t been taught much about them formally. Databases seem really simple when you start working with them, but learning about their more complex parts has been very interesting and insightful.
What made you happy this week?
My brother and I went to see The String Cheese Incident at Stubb’s this weekend. I didn’t know about them beforehand, but the concert was far better than I expected and we had a great time. It was nice to hang out with my brother for a couple days and listen to awesome music together.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My tip this week is to go outside! We are currently in the small window of amazing weather in Texas between extreme heat and cold. Enjoy the weather now before it quickly becomes frigid and inhospitable.
